* "The Launching of the Kalmar Nyckel"
Documentary with soundtrack by Hoven Droven will be offered by American Public Television (as a free program) to PBS stations around the country, beginning in June. Folks should call their local stations in April and encourage them to carry this APT offering.

The legendary Kalmar Nyckel, the Swedish Tall Ship that first landed in Delaware in 1638, comes to life as the ship is painstakingly reconstructed using historic techniques and tools. This program raises a flag to celebrate this important Swedish-American connection and the art of a vanishing tradition: Tall Ship Building. For more information about the program visit www.teleduction.com/PAGES/kalmar.htm

To find your local PBS affiliate go to www.pbs.org/stationfinder/, type in your zip code and it will list the station's email / address, etc.

New York Times:
Hedningarna's Karelia Visa appeared in "...a selection of rewarding world-music albums from the past year." Writer Jon Pareles says, "...hearty melodies that can seem like Celtic reels one moment, Slavic polyphony the next...While the lyrics are haunted by mortality, the songs sound square-jawed and sturdy, dug in against adversity."

Wizard Women of the North reviewed in Rolling Stone:
December 16-23, 1999: On The Edge by David Fricke

Wizard Women Wizard Women of the North (Northside, CD) is truth in advertising, mesmeric evocations of village loves and woodland dramas by contemporary female folk singers and instrumentalists from Norway, Sweden and Finland. Susanne Rosenberg re-creates herding calls in an ice-sculpture soprano; Tellu overdubs her voice into a cool-breeze choir in "Tuulet" ("The Winds"); the fiddlers Annbjørg Lien and Hege Rimestad play bracing songs of dance and contemplation.

Jon Pareles of the New York Times reviews Loituma's Things of Beauty: "These conservatory-trained musicians probably sound more polished than the original performers of their folk songs; in exchange, they bring the music an angelic purity. ...ethereal voices, accompanied by the chiming tones of a five-string harp and an occasional fiddle. The melodies are kin to Celtic and medieval music, ranging from jaunty waltzes to sustained, otherworldly chorales that seem to float between centuries."

From the NPR website: "[18.] [SCANDANAVIAN MUSIC] -- Elizabeth talks with Rob Simonds (SIGH-munds), the co-founder of Rykodisc Records and the "creator" of NorthSide Records. NorthSide specializes in issuing contemporary Scandinavian "roots" music. Simonds introduces us to a number of bands, mostly made up of young players who are revitalizing the folk traditions of Scandinavia. Simonds believes that fans of world music in this country will be attracted to this energetic and interesting new take on centuries-old traditional music. They talk about how Simonds discovered this music, why it appeals to him, and who exactly is buying it. (STATIONS: The bands that are part of this round-up include Den Fule, Vasen, Wimme, Hedningarna and Swåp. All are about to be released on NorthSide Records, based in Minneapolis.) (7:30) ((STEREO))"
